Drone clips of Istanbul's Galata Tower became a 3D history guide: 670 years told where they happened, in any weather, with visits to book

A landmark guide in 3D. It opens on the real sunset flight rising from the streets to the cone, then the footage turns into a 3D Galata quarter you can explore. Cards pinned on the tower tell its story where it happened: the Genoese Christea Turris of 1348, the prison and fire lookout after 1453, the cone lost in the 1860s and 70s and rebuilt in the 1960s, the gallery everyone climbs for, and the 1638 flying legend. Sample visits and walking tours sit on the cards, so a visitor can explore first and then book. Gulls circle the cone, and the same 3D can be seen as filmed, at midday, at golden hour, or in rain, snow or fog.

What went wrong

  • The first build used two clips, and its opening film was made from stills, which warped. This one joins five clips and opens on the original footage.
  • The water and the far shores gave the build almost nothing to work with, so they show as sunset haze rather than water.

What happens next

  • Narration, like the Doonagore story.
  • More Istanbul landmarks in the same style.
